9. Performance Evaluation
9.1 Monitoring, Measurement, Analysis and Evaluation
Performance evaluation is what separates a working EMS from a paper one. The organisation decides what to monitor, with what methods, on what cadence — emissions, resource use, compliance status, objective progress — and uses calibrated, fit-for-purpose measurement. Results are analysed, compared against targets and obligations, and used to drive decisions. Data without evaluation is just storage.
9.2 Internal Audit
Internal audits are the EMS auditing itself before anyone else does. They run on a planned schedule that prioritises higher-risk areas and recent changes, are carried out by people independent of the activity being audited, and answer two questions clearly: does the system meet ISO 14001 and the organisation's own requirements, and is it actually being followed in practice. Findings feed corrective action and management review.
